Step 1: Find a Product Worth Selling

Start from demand, not from the cheapest listing. Search the product on Shopee and Lazada, note the price range and count how many sellers already carry it. A product with steady sales and a gap between its China price and its local price is a candidate.

Favor items that are light, small and hard to break, since freight is charged by weight and size. Skip anything that needs approvals, such as cosmetics, food, supplements and items with batteries, until you know the rules.

Quick checks before you shortlist a product
  • Is it selling steadily on Shopee or Lazada, not just listed?
  • Can you still earn a margin after freight and platform fees?
  • Is it light enough that freight will not eat the profit?
  • Is it a branded or copied design that could cause trademark problems?
  • Does it need FDA, DTI or other approval to sell in the Philippines?

Step 2: Check the Supplier Before You Pay

A cheap price means little if the seller disappears. On Taobao, AliExpress and Temu, read recent reviews with photos and check seller ratings and how long the shop has been open. On Alibaba, compare several suppliers, ask for product photos and confirm the MOQ in writing.

For larger Alibaba orders, read how Trade Assurance works and what it covers. Ready to place one? Follow the step-by-step Alibaba order guide. No platform guarantees a good supplier, so treat every listing as unproven until your sample arrives.

How to compare two Alibaba suppliers
  • Ask both for the same specs, MOQ and sample price.
  • Check how fast and clearly each one replies.
  • Compare lead time and the payment terms offered.
  • Prefer paying through the platform so the order is documented.

Step 3: Order a Sample First

Buy one or two units before any bulk order. A sample shows you the real quality, the real size and weight, how long delivery takes and how the packaging holds up. It is also your chance to test how the seller handles problems.

Weigh the packed sample and use that weight in your cost math. Many first-time importers estimate weight from the listing and get the freight wrong.

Step 4: Choose How You Ship It

There are three ways to get goods from China to the Philippines. The best one depends on the platform and the size of the order.

OptionBest forWhat drives the costWatch out for
Direct from the platformTemu, AliExpress and Pinduoduo ordersItem price, sometimes shipping shown at checkoutLonger delivery on some sellers, and returns are slower
Shipping agent or forwarderTaobao, 1688 and Weidian ordersWeight and size, plus service feesCheck agent fees, consolidation time and storage limits
Air cargoLight, valuable or urgent goodsChargeable weight (actual or volumetric, whichever is higher)Bulky light items cost more than they look
Sea cargoHeavy or bulky stock in volumeVolume (CBM) or weight, plus port and local handlingSlower, with extra local charges, and published rates vary widely

Forwarders in our Taobao shipping fee guide list roughly ₱400 to ₱700 per kg by air and ₱200 to ₱400 by sea. That is a published snapshot, not a quote. For bulk stock, compare options in cheapest way to move cargo for a small business and get at least two live quotes.

Five-step landed cost chain from item price to China shipping, freight, customs and local delivery
Landed cost has five parts, and the item price is only the first one

Step 5: Work Out Customs and Landed Cost

Your landed cost is everything you pay to get one unit to your door: item price, China shipping, freight, any duty and VAT, and local delivery. Resellers who only compare item prices often find their margin has disappeared.

Shipments valued at ₱10,000 or less are widely reported as exempt from duty and VAT, while larger shipments can be taxed based on value and item type. Several parcels addressed to you on the same day may be added together. Rules change, so check the Bureau of Customs and your courier or agent. Our import cost calculator and parcel shipping cost calculator help with the basics.

Step 6: Price It to Sell

Add Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop fees, payment fees and returns to your landed cost, then add your margin. Use the planner below to see your profit per unit and your break-even price.

Try it: landed cost and profit per unit

Example numbers are filled in. Replace them with your supplier quote, today's exchange rate and your forwarder's rate.

If the planner shows a thin margin, the fix is usually a lighter product, a cheaper freight option or a higher price, not a bigger order. See how resellers compare platforms in Taobao vs Alibaba vs Shopee for resellers and the full buying steps in the Alibaba reseller guide.

Risks and Red Flags

Cross-border returns are slow and often cost more than the item. If a product could be returned often, test it with a small batch first. Read whether Temu is legit and whether Pinduoduo is legit before you place a first order.

Latest News: What Changed for Importers

The ₱10,000 duty-free threshold is still the figure most often cited, and we found no confirmed change to it for 2026. The Philippine retailers' group has pushed to lower or remove it, saying large volumes of imports enter tax-free, as covered in an Inquirer report on the de minimis rule. A change would hit small resellers first, so watch for Bureau of Customs announcements.

On the platform side, Temu is reported to have launched a semi-hosted Philippine site in February 2025, per Jiemian, and Pinduoduo now offers free shipping to the Philippines on official products. Published sea and air freight rates for China to the Philippines also vary widely between forwarders in 2026, which is another reason to get live quotes.

Your Sourcing Plan

Test one product with a small order, check the supplier, order a sample, compare freight, compute your landed cost and only then scale up. Platforms are tools, and the product and the math decide whether you make money. When you are ready, browse current deals on Temu, Pinduoduo, Taobao and Alibaba.

Sourcing From China: Common Questions

What is the best way to source products from China to the Philippines?
Start small. Test demand with a few units from Temu or Pinduoduo, then move to Taobao, AliExpress or Alibaba once you know a product sells. Always order a sample and compute your landed cost first.
Is Temu or Alibaba better for resellers?
Temu suits testing one or two items with no minimum order. Alibaba suits repeat bulk orders where you want lower unit prices and can talk to the supplier, usually with a minimum order quantity (MOQ). Many resellers use both in order.
Can I buy from Taobao and ship to the Philippines?
Taobao does not ship straight to the Philippines for most sellers, so you use a shipping agent or forwarder that buys, consolidates and ships your order. See our Taobao shipping agent guide for the steps.
Do I pay customs when I import from China?
Shipments valued at ₱10,000 or less are widely reported as exempt from duty and VAT, but rules and enforcement can change and several parcels on the same day may be added together. Check the Bureau of Customs and your courier for current rules.
How much does shipping from China cost?
It depends on weight, size and speed. Forwarders in our Taobao shipping fee guide list roughly ₱400 to ₱700 per kg by air and ₱200 to ₱400 by sea. Published bulk sea rates vary widely, so get at least two live quotes.
Do I need a business permit to resell imported goods?
If you sell regularly, you will likely need to register your business and follow tax rules. Some items, such as cosmetics, food and batteries, also have their own requirements. Check with the DTI, BIR and the relevant agency before you stock them.
