E-Wallet vs Digital Bank at a Glance
Both live in your phone, but they do different jobs. A wallet is the fastest way to pay. A digital bank is a place to keep and grow money.

| Feature | E-wallet | Digital bank |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Payments, QR, bills, top-ups | Savings, deposits, transfers |
| Examples | GCash, Maya, ShopeePay, GrabPay | GoTyme, MariBank, Tonik, UNO Digital Bank |
| Interest on balance | Often via a partner product (check rates) | Core feature (rates change often) |
| Deposit protection | Ask the provider, wallet balances are e-money | Bank deposits are generally PDIC-covered, confirm limits |
| Best for | Daily spending and online checkout | Parking savings and emergency funds |
What 2026 Data and News Say
Digital payments are now mainstream. The BSP reported that they reached 64.7 percent of retail payment volume in 2025, up from 57.4 percent in 2024, and that QR Ph processed 2.47 billion transactions worth ₱1.16 trillion, passing card usage for the first time, per BusinessWorld. Digital payment accounts grew 69.4 percent.
In October, Manila Bulletin reported that Maya powers Apple Pay transactions on the backend, with executives saying GCash, GoTyme and other digital banks are customers rather than competitors because of its acquiring business. Separately, PesoHub lists reported items worth watching: GCash parent Mynt authorizing a filing for a potential IPO on June 27, 2026 (about 12 percent of post-IPO shares), MariBank receiving a BSP digital bank license in July 2026, and savings rates that moved during the year. Those are reported items, so confirm them with the companies.
Rates are volatile. Reports describe GoTyme at a flat 3 percent in one source and about 5 percent in another, and Maya cutting a base rate from 3.5 to 3.0 percent on April 1, 2026. Treat every rate as a snapshot and check live.
