Splitting a shared bill without arguments

Shared meters are common in boarding houses, apartments and shared homes in the Philippines. Without a clear method, bills turn into arguments about who ran the aircon or the water pump.

This calculator uses the sub-meter reading of each room, charges the rate from the main bill and divides the common area cost fairly. The table is easy to screenshot and share in the group chat.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split an electricity bill between rooms?
Divide the total bill by the total units to get a rate, then multiply each room's sub-meter units by that rate. Share any leftover units equally.
Is it fair to charge the same rate as the utility?
Charging the average rate from the main bill keeps the split transparent. Some landlords add a small service fee, so agree on it in writing.
What is the common area?
It is the power or water used by shared spaces and the losses between meters. It equals the main units minus the sub-meter total.
Can I use this for water?
Yes. Enter the water bill and the cubic meters from the main and sub-meters.
How should we agree on the method?
Write down the method, take a photo of every meter reading each month and share the result with everyone.
