Best Credit Card for a Japan Trip: Quick Comparison
Choosing the best credit card for a Japan trip from the Philippines comes down to three things: the rebate you can realistically earn, the foreign transaction fee you pay, and whether the card is accepted where you shop. The table lists what is shown on our brand pages. Last checked: October 16, 2026.
| Card | Best for | What it lists |
|---|---|---|
| BDO JCB | Japan-focused spending | 10% rebate on Japan spend and 5% elsewhere after ₱50,000, capped at ₱5,000 (Oct 1 to Nov 30, 2026) |
| UnionPay (BDO, RCBC Bankard, PNB) | Trips that also cover China or Hong Kong | Rotating Japan dining and retail offers, bank-specific and campaign based |
| Visa | Backup card with wide acceptance | Partner promos vary by issuing bank |
| Mastercard | Second backup network | Offers vary by issuing bank |
BDO JCB: The Japan Specialist
JCB is headquartered in Japan, and BDO runs the most visible JCB promos in the Philippines. The current BDO JCB Japan rebate lists 10% on Japan spend and 5% on spend in other countries after ₱50,000 cumulative spend, capped at ₱5,000, from October 1 to November 30, 2026. The offer covers Lucky Cat, Gold and Platinum cards.
Platinum holders also see two travel perks: 10% or JPY 5,000 back on JPY 50,000 cumulative spend at listed Premium Outlets in Japan (September 1 to November 30, 2026), and a ₱188 processing fee for a multiple-entry Japan visa through selected travel agencies (August 1 to December 31, 2026). Do the math before you chase the minimum: a ₱5,000 cap on ₱50,000 of spend is only worth it if you were going to spend that much anyway.
UnionPay: Useful if Your Trip Goes Beyond Japan
UnionPay Philippines card offers are strongest for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, with Japan dining and retail discounts that rotate by campaign. BDO, RCBC Bankard and PNB issue UnionPay cards, and offers are bank-specific, so read the validity dates on your issuer's page. UnionPay acceptance in Japan depends on the merchant, so look for the logo at the counter.
Visa and Mastercard: Your Backup Cards
Visa Philippines and Mastercard Philippines are the two dominant networks in the country and are accepted at most merchants worldwide. They rarely match JCB for Japan-specific rebates, but they are the safer choice when a shop does not take JCB. For a trip that mixes Japan with other countries, one JCB card plus one Visa or Mastercard is a common setup.
Foreign Transaction Fees: Count Them Before You Count the Rebate
Issuing banks usually charge a foreign transaction fee on overseas spend, and the rate differs by card. A 10% rebate can shrink once the fee is subtracted, and the ₱5,000 cap limits the upside. Look up your card's fee schedule on your bank's website, then compare the net result across your cards. Our travel credit card promos guide explains how rebates, installments and lounge perks differ.
Which Card Wins in Each Situation
- Pick BDO JCB if most of your spending is in Japan, you can reach ₱50,000 before November 30, 2026, and you want Platinum outlet or visa perks.
- Pick UnionPay if your itinerary also includes China, Hong Kong or Macau and your bank has a running offer.
- Pick Visa or Mastercard if you want the widest acceptance or you are visiting several countries.
- Carry two networks if you cannot afford a declined payment. This is the main rule of the trip.
Pair Your Card With Tickets and Activities
Once your card is sorted, plan what to book. Our best Klook activities in Japan post covers tickets and passes you can pay for with the same card, and the Klook Philippines page lists current offers. Check whether a rebate counts online bookings paid in pesos before you assume it applies.
Your 5-Step Japan Trip Card Plan
Check your travel dates
Match your trip against the BDO JCB promo windows that end November 30 and December 31, 2026.
Read the promo terms
Note the spend minimum, the cap and which merchants count.
Look up foreign fees
Find the transaction fee on each card and subtract it from the expected rebate.
Pack two networks and some yen
Bring a JCB or UnionPay card plus a Visa or Mastercard, and keep cash for small shops.
Pay in yen and clear the balance
Choose local currency at the terminal and pay your statement in full so interest does not cancel your rebate.
A note on credit: only spend what you can repay. Interest on an unpaid balance can cost more than any rebate, and applying for a card just to chase a promo is rarely worth it. Promo terms, caps and dates change, so confirm everything with BDO or your issuing bank.
