BDO American Express vs Mastercard vs JCB at a Glance
Last checked: October 28, 2026. When Filipinos compare BDO American Express vs Mastercard, the real question is acceptance versus perks. BDO sits behind all of these cards, so the network you choose changes where the card works and which promos you can use. Diners Club is included because BDO runs it too.
| Card | Best for | Acceptance note |
|---|---|---|
| BDO American Express | Dining, premium perks, cashback windows | Strong in malls, hotels and fine dining. Weaker in small shops. |
| BDO Mastercard | Everyday spending and online shopping | Accepted almost everywhere, with frequent bank promos. |
| BDO JCB | Japan trips and outlet shopping | Strongest in Japan and parts of Asia. Limited in the West. |
| BDO Diners Club | Frequent flyers who want lounge access | Solid in hotels and restaurants. Weaker in small shops. |
BDO Amex: Premium Perks, Narrower Acceptance
American Express has served cardmembers since 1850, and BDO became its exclusive Philippine issuer after taking over Amex local operations in 2007. The American Express Philippines page lists BDO cashback runs in 2026: up to ₱3,000 on spend anywhere, up to ₱2,000 on dining (August), and up to ₱5,000 on buy now pay later (May). BDO's Explore Asia travel promo is listed until December 31, 2026.
The tradeoff is acceptance. Amex is strong in malls, hotels and fine dining, but smaller shops and markets often do not take it. Past windows have ended, so treat them as a pattern of what BDO may run again, not a promise.
BDO Mastercard: The Everyday Workhorse
Mastercard Philippines is accepted at virtually every terminal, and BDO is one of the banks that issues it. That makes it the practical choice for groceries, online shopping and bills. If you are comparing networks more broadly, read our Mastercard vs Visa Philippines guide. For BDO's own card promos and the SM tie-in, see the BDO Philippines promo codes page.
BDO JCB: Built for Japan
JCB is headquartered in Japan and entered the Philippine market in 1996, so 2026 is its 30th year here. The JCB Philippines page lists Lucky Cat, Gold and Platinum tiers through BDO. Current offers include the October 1 to November 30 rebate (10% on Japan spend, 5% elsewhere, after ₱50,000 spend, capped at ₱5,000) and, for Platinum holders, 10% or JPY 5,000 back on JPY 50,000 spend at listed Premium Outlets until November 30. A ₱188 multiple-entry Japan visa processing fee perk is listed through December 31 for Platinum holders at select travel agencies.
Acceptance in Practice: Where Each Card Works
Acceptance is the biggest practical gap between these cards. Mastercard is taken at nearly every terminal in the country, including supermarkets, pharmacies and online checkouts. Amex and Diners Club cover malls, hotels and restaurants well, but wet markets, small provincial stores and many roadside shops will ask for cash or an e-wallet. JCB is more limited still outside Japan and parts of Asia.
For local QR payments at shops that skip cards entirely, an e-wallet such as GCash fills the gap. Before a trip, check which networks your destination favors, because a card that works at home may not work abroad.
How BDO Promo Windows Work
BDO's card promos run in short windows with spend minimums and caps. The JCB rebate, for example, needs ₱50,000 in cumulative spend and pays out at most ₱5,000 per card. A dining cashback of up to ₱2,000 ran in August and a buy now pay later cashback of up to ₱5,000 ran in May, and both have ended. That pattern suggests similar promos may return, but only the terms on BDO's promo pages count.
Read each promo for the eligible merchant types, the posting period and whether online or overseas spend qualifies. Cashback only helps if you were going to spend the money anyway. Chasing a minimum spend you would not otherwise reach turns a perk into a cost.
Costs to Check Before You Apply
Annual fees, income requirements and interest rates vary by card tier, and they can outweigh a year of rewards. We do not list fee figures here because they change, so open BDO's fee schedule and compare the exact card you are considering. Also check foreign transaction charges if you plan to use the card abroad, since they reduce the value of any overseas rebate.
Which BDO Card Should You Pick?
- Pick Amex if you dine out and book hotels often and can accept that some merchants will not take it.
- Pick Mastercard if you want one card that works nearly everywhere, online and offline.
- Pick JCB if you travel to Japan regularly and will use the rebate and outlet offers.
- Consider Diners Club if you fly often. BDO launched it in 2018, and select cardholders who qualified on ₱350,000 spend in 2025 get two lounge visits valid until December 31, 2026.
Whatever you choose, carry a backup. A common setup is one premium card plus a Mastercard or Visa Philippines card for places that do not take the first. See our best credit cards 2026 guide for fees and income requirements.
