How to buy a phone on installment wisely
A new phone is one of the most common installment purchases. The monthly amount looks small, but the total can be much higher on plans with interest or fees. Knowing the total helps you choose between cash, a 0% card plan and a store plan.
Start by lowering the price: look for store promos, trade-in offers, student discounts and bank deals. Then finance the smaller amount. The lower the amount, the lower the interest you can pay.

How the phone installment is calculated
- For 0% plans, the monthly payment is the phone price divided by the number of months, plus any fee.
- For add-on rates, interest equals price times the monthly rate times the months, split evenly.
- For annual rates, payments follow a diminishing balance.
- Phone prices and promos change often, so enter the current price from the store you plan to buy from.
Tips to save more
- Check bank 0% promos before you choose a store plan.
- Keep total monthly installments below a comfortable share of your take-home pay.
- Consider last year's model for a big drop in price.
- Sell or trade in your old phone to reduce the amount you finance.
